All my jewelry is fabricated in stainless steel. My curious jeweler friends inevitably ask me "why on earth would you want to work in such an intractable medium"? My answer is invariabbly "because I can"...Stainless steel is generally hypo-allergenic,exceedingly durable, and provides interesting surface decoration possibilities.
Here's the second iteration of this spiral torque motif . I tried a slightly new technique that is giving me favorable results allowing me to control the deformations and collapsing as I twist the bar with one hand and torch heating with the other. The key is to PULL TENSION as you twist. This lays up the ridges more evenly...
It's still quite a chore to try and keep the seams from opening up when I wrap it around the neck form for the final heat but it does seem to be an improvement. What I find most curious and surprising is the amount of material that is taken up in the twisting.I started with a 24" bar and it's been reduced to 16" overall. |
